Luis explained to his PenPals that, "In my state people use the flag to honor the soldiers who fought in the war to protect us. Every day in school we would the pledge of allegiance to honor the ones who are still fighting and ones who died for us. We are thankful for them."
Luis also explained to his PenPals that each element of the American flag has a specific meaning. "Blue represents freedom and justice as started in the text. Red represents blood from the Revolution War. White stands for peace. The fifty stars represent the fifty states. The 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 colonies.
Above, you can see the flag that Luis and his PenPals made. Way to go Luis!
We especially loved the discussion Brennan and his PenPals had around Popular Culture. Brennan explained popular fads including music, fidget spinners, and common social media applications.
"Some of the most popular music in our schools is rap. i do not personally enjoy it but a lot of people do. Another big fad were fidget spinners. Our community doesn't have a lot of slang words except "dude" but that's really it. social media is a big thing in our community. A lot of kids have Snapchat which is how almost all of our news gets around. Another popular thing is Ugg boots are kind of popular nowadays because it gets cold here a lot. Also, the biggest sport here is probably football (american) or basketball."
When asked to describe his favorite part of his PenPal exchange, Brennan explained, "My favorite part of the PenPal Exchange is learning about the cultures of all my penpals and listening to their different responses."
Way to go Brennan! Thanks for all of your hard work!
Ave told the PenPal Schools team that, " I have loved learning about what different cultures common with my culture. I enjoyed participating and talking with kids from other countries. I think I learned a lot about the topics I worked on, too."
