CASA Mission Statement: “The mission of Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA) Middle School is to provide an aesthetic learning environment that graduates self-aware, hardworking, and socially responsible, 21st century learners.”
The PenPal schools team received a wonderfully enthusiastic reception at CASA. In the town hall style assembly, the PenPal Schools team talked about international communication, cultural exchanges, and the opportunities that organizations like PenPal Schools provide. For part of the town hall, the gathered students connected over Skype to students in Argentina and discussed issues important to them. The academy put together a video that documented the assembly, which can be viewed below.
However, at that point, the PenPal Schools team was not quite ready to take it easy and relax. They were, after all, in the Big Apple, one of the most vibrant and multicultural cities in the world. As dusk fell, the team drove the bus around the city, taking in the sounds and sights and smells. Huge crowds of people flowed like rivers down the sidewalk channels, silhouetted by bright neon advertisements. A few curious passerby tried peeking into the windows and the team invited them aboard to talk and enjoy the city from an unusual perspective.
Though the evening was passed merrily, the team couldn’t help but to heave a collective sigh of relief. It had been a long journey and each person aboard the bus dreamed of his or her bed at home, much more comfortable than the bunk beds on the bus.
The next day, the team gathered aboard, steeled themselves for the 26 hour drive from New York, New York to Austin, Texas, and set off on the road.
